Media Release: Isuzu delivers for Addo Elephant National Park Date: 2005-02-14
GM South Africa has given support to the Eastern Cape conservation challenge by recently winning the tender to supply Isuzu vehicles to the Addo Elephant National Park.
The fleet of Isuzu 4x4s will be put through their paces by rangers in the essential work of patrolling the various areas of the 148 000-hectare national park. The vehicles will aid in patrolling predator-proof fences, checking water supplies for the over 420-strong elephant herd and generally to ensure that the park runs smoothly.
Purchase of the Isuzu fleet was made possible through part of a $5.5 million grant from the World Bank. Funding will go toward improving the management of the Addo Elephant National Park and also includes a proposed proclamation of a Marine Protected Area in Algoa Bay, generating business for local community contractors and small businesses, establishing an environmental education centre and training for staff.
The new 4x4 vehicles will allow us to manage the expanded park more effectively. We are confident that we can rely on these vehicles to perform in the bush terrain, said Park Manager, Lucius Moolman.
Director Sales & Marketing Malcolm Gauld commented that GM South Africa welcomed the opportunity to supply Addo National Park with the vehicle fleet. He said, We are pleased that Isuzu remains highly competitive in terms of its quality, reliability and price. Furthermore, it was selected from a strong field of competitors to meet the transportation needs of the Park. At the same time, we are proud to be able to contribute meaningfully and positively to nature conservation in the Eastern Cape.
The Addo Elephant National Park is situated 75 kilometres from Port Elizabeth and conserves parts of five of South Africas seven biomes, along with a rich diversity of faunal species.
