The Pitfalls of Car Hire in South Africa... Take Note!
It's a while since I last hired a car since I normally prefer to drive around the country to take advantage of the scenic beauty of South Africa. In this case my wife and I flew to George for a week's touring of the world famous Garden Route. As is normal these days we made all bookings online... 3 different guest house, return air fares and car hire.
I checked 4 different car hire companies' prices for the same small car or similar model (I eventually hired a Ford Fiesta) and was shocked to see the difference between the highest and lowest. The highest was Avis and this despite the fact that I carry what is called a "Presidents Club" card entitling me to a 30% discount. The Avis quote was more than double the best quote I got which was from First Car Rental (previously Alamo/National). Not only was the basic price from Avis double that of First Car Rental the insurance cost was excluded from the quote and there was a daily limit on allowed mileage.
