Explore 350 Bays & Baais Around South Africa’s Coast-line 2,800 kms Long Using Google Earth.

The South African coastline is very long … 2,800kms or approx 1,750 miles. Fly over all of them with Google Earth. The South African coastline stretches from the border with Namibia in the west right round the Cape of Good Hope, the southernmost point of Africa called, Algulhas up to the border with Mozambique.
This coastline is famous for its sunshine beaches, white sands, high sand dunes, rocky coves, a variety of estuaries and many many secluded and not so secluded bays (in Afrikaans a bay is a baai).

Bays and Baais of South Africa

The western side of the country borders the Atlantic Ocean and the water is cold with rich fishing grounds and wild beaches that hardly ever see people. There are many shipwrecks along this coast and it’s the reason it is called the Skeleton Coast.

Because cold water meets warm air the area is prone to daily fogs in some places bordering the Namib Desert. This fog has created a unique eco-environment where many plants and animals have learned to survive in this remote hot and arid desert area by making use of this moisture borne fog.

As you round the Cape of Good Hope and gradually make way along the long southern coast before it turns north the water temperature starts to increase and by the time you’ve arrived at Durban you can happily swim in the indian Ocean all year round without feeling cold at all.

In the area leading up towards East London there are many half-heart bays created through the action of the prevailing winds over many years.

To the best of my knowledge the only place you can see all the bays in one place, with their names is on this Google Earth interactive map which you can access by clicking the link.

South and then East from St Helena Bay to Agulhas Point and Grootsandbaai

From St Helena Bay this list will take you around the Cape of Good Hope heading south then east along the coast. At Cape Point the 2 oceans meet (Atlantic and Indian) and then west towards Agulhas which is the most southerly part of the African Continent. The bay there is aptly named Grootsandbaai. This coastline (especially east from Cape Town) is famous for whale watching at close quarters.
