The Garden Route is a Stunning Part of South Africa... Situated in Western Cape
This beautiful coastal drive is much loved by tourists, as it has a diverse range of landmarks to visit. Leaving from Cape Town by motor car on the N2 national road, the Garden Route starts somewhere between Riversdale and the coastal town of Mossel Bay where adrenalin-junkies bungee jump off the Gouritz River bridge.
Many visitors choose a self-drive option from the Cape and head up the coast to explore and discover George, Sedgefield, Wilderness, Knysna, Natureıs Valley and Plettenberg Bay. The Garden Route journey ends at the Tsitsikamma National Park, where the Stormsriver mouth with its suspension bridge is a fun stop. This green area is well-known for its hiking trails, notably the Otter Trail and Tsitsikammma Trail which are completed over a few days with stays at overnight forestry huts. Spectacular flora and views of the sea and mountains are absorbed on these routes.
The Cango Caves in Oudtshoorn is one of the most popular attractions on the edge of the Klein Karoo just north of the Garden Route Coast and can be included in a tour of this area. Ostrich farms draw the crowds too, some farms in operation since the days of the Ostrich boom in the 1920s.
Knysna has been voted town of the year in South Africa, as its hospitality and tourist-friendly approach matches the wide range of interesting and beautiful spots to visit. Take the Outeniqua Choo-Tjoe from George to Knysna and experience steam train travel while viewing breathtaking scenery. Rent a house-boat on the Knysna lagoon or visit Featherbed Nature Reserve by ferry or see the Knysna Heads rock formations.
Another attraction for many on the Garden Route is the number of the worldıs top golf courses such as Fancourt, the Links and Sparrebosch.
Plettenberg Bay has huge residential properties owned as holiday homes by many wealthy South African families, and is a popular beach resort town on the Garden Route. In the summer months the town is packed with visitors and a party atmosphere prevails throughout the season.
The only free-roaming primate sanctuary in the world, Monkeyland, can be visited, or dolphins and whales can be viewed from day-trip boat charters, and for those in search of adventure there are ample options: surfing, sea kayaking, scuba-diving, abseiling or bungee-jumping, cycling and hiking in the forest. For those who prefer to take it easy while on holiday, oysters and champagne should go down well with the sunset.
