Budget day in every country is always a big event. In South Africa Budget Day is a massive news event and has an impact upon the immediate future for so many South Africans most of whom look to the budget in terms of hope ... hoping it will bring relief to the poor and job opportunities to many.
South Africa in terms of democracy as everybody knows is only 10 years + a bit old. Nelson Mandela was the first president and resided over the first real and widespread South African budgets. These presented enormous challenges and the country in general has risen to the challenges.
Today the South African finance minister Trevor Manuel (I think Mr Manuel is the world's longest serving finance minister) will announce what the South African population can expect to see in terms of money to be spent over the next 12 months. Since job creation remains the major challenge facing us in South Africa there will hopefully be a focus in the budget on creating such opportunities.
Nevertheless whatever happens the sun will shine again in South Africa tomorrow as it does almost every day (literally), the lions will feed in the Kruger National Park and the Cape will be as fair as it ever was .... if you're reading this then take a look at us. We're not so bad you know ... and South Africa has so much to offer everyone in the world.
